Central Athens, packed around the Acropolis and Plaka, is dense, one-way heavy and best explored on foot — but the city opens up considerably once you're headed for the coast, and the drive out towards Cape Sounio is one of the more underrated routes in our network.
Base yourself for an easy start. Delivery to a hotel in Kolonaki or Glyfada keeps you clear of the historic centre's one-way system while still close enough for an easy morning start.
The Athens Riviera is the actual drive. The coast road running southeast from Piraeus through Glyfada and Vouliagmeni towards Cape Sounio hugs the water for much of its length — a good match for a Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder or Ferrari 296 GTS with the roof down.
Time Sounio for sunset, not midday. The Temple of Poseidon at the cape is at its best in the late afternoon light, and the coast road back into the city is considerably quieter once the day-trip traffic has cleared.
Amara's Greece fleet covers Athens, Thessaloniki and Mykonos — Athens itself is available on a two-day minimum, shorter than our island shipping lead time.
