The SS163 — the coastal road linking Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi — is one of the most photographed drives in Europe, and one of the most misunderstood. It's narrow, it switches back constantly, and in peak season it carries tour coaches, scooters and delivery vans in equal measure. Done right, though, it's a genuinely special few hours behind the wheel.
Time it early. Leave Sorrento by 7:30–8:00am and you'll have long, empty stretches of road before the coach traffic builds from mid-morning. The light is better for photos too — the coastline faces roughly south-west, so early morning keeps the sun out of your eyes on the tighter bends.
Pick the right car. This is the one road where a wider supercar can work against you — several hairpins are tight enough that a Range Rover Sport or a Mercedes G63 will place more confidently than a low, wide Aventador. If you want the drama of an open-top Ferrari or Lamborghini, our Huracan Evo Spyder and 296 GTB are narrow enough to enjoy the road without constantly checking your mirrors.
Stop at Ravello. It's a short detour up from Amalfi, but the Villa Rufolo gardens and the view down over the coast are worth the extra thirty minutes, and it's a good excuse to let the car cool down before the drive back.
