Most visitors to Lisbon never make it onto the N247, the coast road that runs from Cascais out to Sintra via Cabo da Roca — continental Europe's westernmost point. It's a genuinely spectacular drive, and considerably quieter than its equivalents on the French or Italian coasts.
Start early for Cabo da Roca itself. Coach tours arrive from mid-morning, and the cliffside car park fills quickly — leave Cascais by 8am and you'll have the viewpoint largely to yourself.
A convertible suits this road better than a hard-top. The pace here is relaxed rather than technical, closer to the Costa del Sol than the Amalfi Coast — a Ferrari Portofino M or an Audi R8 Spider is a better match than anything track-focused.
Factor in the toll roads if your route goes further afield. Portugal's motorways largely run on electronic tolling (Via Verde), and hire cars don't come fitted with a transponder by default — the N247 itself is toll-free, but if you're planning a longer loop towards Porto or the Algarve, ask our team about tolling arrangements when you book.
