A Convertible Road Trip Along the Costa del Sol

The coast road between Marbella and Estepona is easy, well-surfaced cruising rather than a technical drive — which makes it exactly the place for a convertible rather than a track-honed supercar. A Mercedes E-Class Cabrio or Ferrari Portofino M suits the pace better than anything with a fixed roof.

Start in Marbella and run the coast road out to Puerto Banús for the marina and the people-watching, then continue on to Estepona, which is quieter and considerably less built-up than Marbella proper.

If you have half a day spare, the drive inland to Ronda is worth the detour — the road climbs steadily into the mountains and the town itself sits either side of a 100-metre gorge. It's a completely different kind of driving to the coast road, with longer sightlines and proper elevation change.

Timing matters here more than most places. April, May, September and October give you warm enough weather for the roof down without the peak-summer heat and traffic through Marbella and Puerto Banús.

Amara's Spain fleet covers Marbella, Ibiza, Barcelona, Madrid and Mallorca on a two-day minimum hire.
