The unrestricted stretches of Germany's Autobahn network are real, but they're the exception rather than the rule, and they're clearly marked by a sign showing a white diagonal bar — anywhere else, a posted limit applies and is enforced. Knowing the difference matters more than horsepower.
Learn the left-lane rule before you leave the hotel. The left lane is for overtaking only, never for cruising — sitting in it will get you flashed, and rightly so. Merge back right the moment you've passed, even if you plan to overtake again shortly after.
Pick the right car for the derestricted stretches. A Porsche 992 Carrera S or one of our AMG-badged Mercedes is properly at home doing 240km/h in a legal, well-signed section; a tall SUV is a poorer match here even though it's just as capable everywhere else on the trip.
Not every stretch is unlimited, and enforcement is strict. Speed cameras are common near towns and roadworks, and temporary limits appear with little warning around construction — a real-time traffic app is worth having open, and it's always safer to treat a limit as a limit until you see the derestriction sign yourself.
