Rome's centro storico runs one of Europe's strictest ZTL zones, and much of what postcards show — the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps — sits inside it, better explored on foot than from behind a wheel. A car in Rome earns its keep on the approach and on the roads out of the city, not in the tangle of streets around the centre itself.
Arrange delivery outside the ZTL. Most hotels near the historic centre can't accommodate a car at the door — we'll coordinate delivery to a nearby collection point or a hotel just outside the restricted zone, the same approach we use in Florence.
The Via Appia Antica is worth the detour. The old Roman road running southeast from the city, lined with pines and ancient tombs, is one of the few genuinely atmospheric drives inside the ring road — slow going by design, and better suited to something like a Bentley Continental GT than anything low and wide.
The real driving starts past the GRA. Once you're clear of Rome's ring road, the roads towards the Castelli Romani hill towns — Frascati, Castel Gandolfo — open up properly, with better sightlines and considerably less traffic than the city itself.
