The high Alpine passes above Zermatt and Andermatt — the Furka, the Grimsel, the Susten — are as good as driving roads get in Europe: long sightlines, proper elevation change, and switchbacks that reward a car with sharp steering rather than sheer power. They're also seasonal in a way that catches visitors out.
Check the season before you book your dates. Most of the high passes are only open from early June to mid-October, weather permitting — outside that window they're closed by snow, sometimes with very little notice either way. If a specific pass is the reason for your trip, it's worth confirming it's open before finalising your itinerary.
Pick a car that suits switchbacks, not straight-line speed. This is one route where a wide, low supercar can work against you. A Porsche 911 Carrera Cabrio or 992 Targa places more confidently through tight hairpins than something like an Aventador SVJ, and you'll still have all the drama with the roof down.
Budget time for the vignette and border formalities. Swiss motorways require a vignette sticker, and if your route crosses in and out of neighbouring countries it's worth checking documentation in advance — our team can talk you through what's needed for your specific route when you book.
