The Wild Atlantic Way is signposted as a single route, but at over 2,500km nobody sensibly drives all of it on one visit. A loop through Connemara, or a run down towards the Ring of Kerry, gives you the scenery and the driving without turning the trip into a delivery job.
Give yourself more time than the map suggests. Irish back roads are narrower and slower than their equivalents on the Continent, and the weather can change within the hour — build in more time than the sat-nav estimate, especially west of Galway.
An SUV earns its keep here more than it would at home. A Range Rover or Land Rover Defender handles Ireland's mix of weather, narrow lanes and the odd unsealed stretch better than anything low and wide. If you want more occasion for the smoother main roads, an Aston Martin DB11 or Porsche 911 Carrera Cabrio still works well without being a liability on the tighter coastal sections.
